Preparing for an emergency involving children has unique challenges. A Pediatrician and Infectious Disease Physician, Dr. Ted Cieslak currently serves as Associate Director of UNMC’s Center for Biosecurity, Biopreparedness, and Emerging Infectious Diseases. Dr.Cieslak will be presenting Disaster Preparedness: The Unique Needs of the Child and Recognizing Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Children.
This functional exercise will put Dr. Cieslak’s information into action by testing operational capabilities of the healthcare system to respond to a pediatric highly infectious disease. Hospitals, public health, EMS, and others will collaborate to test their plans regarding four response capabilities: 1) Information Sharing, 2) Medical Countermeasure Dispensing, 3) Medical Material Management and Distribution, and 4) Responder Safety and Health.
